Stems erect, 45-250 cm, glabrous in lower part. Leaves membranous, sometimes setulose on veins beneath; lower and median petiolate, 12.5-40 cm (inclpetiole), simple, broadly ovate, triangular or subhastate, cordate or subcordate, sinuate-denticulate or dentate, obtuse to acute, ± acuminate, apiculate, 5-24 x 4.5-20 cm, or compound, with terminal lobe as above and 1-2 pairs of small lateral lobes; upper sessile, with expanded apex and winged petioloid base; uppermost lanceolate, entire, ± glandular-setulose on margins. Inflorescence paniculoid, usually ± congested, capitula 10 or more, often numerous, pedicels and bracts with reddish glandular setae. Involucre 11-14 mm; phyllaries 12-15, 2-3-seriate, glabrous or sparsely setulose on midrib, strongly purple-tinged. Flowers lavender or mauve, 1.3-1.7 cm, long-hairy about mouth. Achenes 4.5-6 mm, pale brown, columnar, obtusely triquetrous, with rounded ribs. Pappus 7-9 mm, straw-coloured. Fl. 8-9. Clearings, rocky places and by streams in moist coniferous and mixed Picea-Fagus forest and scrub, 960-2100 m. Described from Georgia, Steven (LE). N.E. Anatolia.
