P. purpurea L., Sp. Pl. 797 (1753). Ic: Hegi, 111. Fl. Mittel-Eur. 6(2): f. 855 f. 856 t. 279 f. la-c (1929).   Stems erect, leafy to 1 m or more, glabrous or very sparsely setulose. Median cauline leaves membranous, glabrous, sessile, elliptic, plane or remotely sinuate, minutely denticulate, shortly acuminate, 9-17x1.7-5 cm, auriculate, auricles small, rounded, dentate; upper smaller, with ± attenuate apices, 3.5-12.5 x0.5-2.5 cm. Inflorescence paniculoid, lax, many-capitulate, glabrous, capitula nodding. Involucre 10-13.5 mm; phyllaries 10-11, 3-seriate, glabrous. Flowers violet or mauve, c. 1.3 cm, shortly and sparsely hairy about mouth. Achenes c. 5 mm, straw-coloured, columnar, smooth, glabrous, ribs rounded. Pappus 6 mm, white. Fl. 8.
