P. communis L., Sp. PL 459 (1753). Tree up to 20 m, spinescent, especially when young; twigs glabrous or slightly pubescent when young. Leaves ovate-elliptic to ovate-orbicular, 3-5(-7) x 1.5-4 cm, c. 2 x as long as broad, entire or crenate-serrulate, sparsely pubescent when young, becoming glabrous, green, shining above, drying blackish, base rounded or subcordate: petioles up to 5 cm, usually as !ong as or longer than the blade. Inflorescence 5-9-flowered. Flowers ± white, 2-3 cm diam.; pedicels 1.5-3 cm. Fruit pyriform to subglobose, 2-4 cm long, yellowish-green; sepals persistent: pedicels at least as long as fruit. Fl. 4-5. Forests and scrub, s.l.-1650 m. 1. Twigs usually unarmed; fruit over 5 cm long, fleshy subsp. sativa 1. Twigs spinescent; fruit up to 4 cm long, hard 2.
