Stems usually densely hirsute like the petioles, branched above and bearing tripartite leaves; 2-many-flowered. Radical leaves cordate at base, tripartite, 3-10 cm across, segments varying from broadly cuneate and overlapping to narrowly cuneate, with very short, crenate-dentate or incised-dentate lobes, adpressed-pilose. Peduncles terete. Sepals reflexed (always?). Petals 8-15 cm. Torus glabrous. Achenes semicircular, strongly compressed, 3-4 mm, keeled; beak circinate, 1-1.5 mm. Fl. 4-6. Moist places, especially in marshy meadows, s. 1.-2000 m. Type: An Aubriet drawing (unpublished) based on a Tournefort specimen from Istanbul, in Bibl. Jussieu, Paris. Romania, Balkans, Crimea, Caucasia, N. Iraq, Iran, Cyprus, W. Syria. An exceptionally variable species in stature, leaf shape and flower size, requiring biosystematic study. A high altitude form of dwarf stature and with narrowly cuneate leaf segments (described as R. anemonefolius var. balansae Boiss.) inter-grades with the taller var. palaestinus Boiss., and the latter with the 'type' form of the species with broader overlapping leaf segments. A small leaved form from N. Anatolia (Trabzon, 27 iv 1862, Bourgeau! Samsun, Tobey 39!) approaches the Transcaucasian R. georgicus Kem.-Nath. in facies; the latter, however, differs from our plant in its shorter uncinate beak and intergrades with R. kotschyi. R. fibrillosus var. parviflorus Davis is probably best treated as a depauperate form of R. constantinopolitanus. Two flowering specimens from coastal Caria and Pamphylia (C2 Muğla: Marmaris, D. 25296! C3 Antalya: Aksu, D. 19691!) may belong to this species, but differ in their widely spreading sepals and somewhat different leaf shape. This may be the Lydian plant referred by O. Schwarz(Feddes Rep. 36: 33, 1934) to R. umbrosııs Ten. & Guss., a synonym of R. lanuginosus L. whose presence in Anatolia seems unlikely. |
