  N. Iraq, Syrian Desert, Cyprus; N.W. Iran? Replaced in W. Syria by subsp. hierosolymitanus (Boiss.) Davis; it has been recorded from Osmaniye in Amanus by Post (ed. Dinsm.), Fl. Syr. 1: 12 (1932), but the record seems doubtful. The species differs from R. macrorhynchus by its shorter leaf laciniae, elongated fruiting head, and achenes with a nearly straight beak. Intermediates between R. millefolius sensu stricto and R. macrorhynchus subsp. trigonocarpus have been seen from N. Iraq. R. orientalis L. is treated as a nomen confusion.
