R. lutea L., Sp. PL 449 (1753). Figure 20, p. 503. Annual to perennial herbs with stems erect or ascending to 70 cm. Lowermost leaves sometimes entire, usually with all leaves narrow, tri- or pinnati-fid. Sepals 5-6, persistent and becoming twisted in fruit. Petals 6, yellow, the limbs trilobed, and with the lateral lobes lunulate, entire, crenulate and occasionally more deeply divided into irregular segments; the midlobes shorter and entire. Capsules cylindrical, sometimes ovate or even subglobose, or triquetrous, glabrous. Seeds yellow to black, shiny, ± smooth. Fl. 4-8. Ubiquitous, roadsides, fields, ditches, open stony hillsides, etc., s.1.-2000 m. 1. Capsuies always erect var. lutea 1. At least the lowermost capsules pendulous when fully ripe var. nutans var. lutea. Syn: R. truncata Fisch. & Mey., Ind. Sem. hort. Petrop. (1837) & Linnaea 12 (1838). Ic: Reichb., Ic. Fl.
