N.W. Africa, Europe (except extreme N.), S.W. & C. Asia, W. Siberia. Euro-Sib. element. A specimen from A7 Trabzon: Trabzon, 50 m, Stainton 8118 probably represents the hybrid between S. alba and S. fragilis. The hybrid is also recorded from near Istanbul: Altum kum, Krause 3054 (fide Görz in Krause, op. cit., 1930). The female catkins of this species are rather prone to develop galls. Its wood is used for making cricket bats.
