  Shrub or tree to 15 m. Twigs glabrous, vinous-red to dark brown, not fragile; buds narrowly ovoid, acute, not adpressed to twigs. Decorticated wood smooth. Leaves elliptic-lanceolate to elliptic-ovate, 2-4 x as long as wide, 5-9 x 2.2-3.5 cm, acuminate, glandular-serrate, dark green above, paler green below, glabrous; petiole 6-12(-15) mm, with 1-3 pairs of subapical glands. Stipules small, ± ovate, soon caducous. Catkins appearing after leaves, cylin-drical; male 2-6 x 1-1.5 cm, dense, stamens usually 5, occasionally to 9, anthers 0.5-0.6(-0.7) mm; filaments pilose near base; female 2-5 x 0.8-1 cm, slender; flowers with 2 nectaries, ovary narrowly ovoid; capsule 5-6 mm, fruiting pedi-cels to 2 x nectaries. Margins of lakes and rivers, 800-1300 m.
