Perennial herb with a woody rootstock; stems erect, 10-30(-70) cm, often branched above, eglandular-pilose below, usually thickly glandular-pilose above. Leaves mostly basal, variable, entire to pinnatifid, narrow oblong to ovate, 2-7(-10) x 1.5-7 cm, eglandular-pubescent with sessile glands, crenate to erose; petiole 1.2-8 cm. Verticillasters 4-6-flowered, distant or condensed above. Bracts ovate-acuminate, c. 6 x 6 mm; bracteoles present. Pedicel c. 2 mm. Calyx ± campanulate, 5-7 mm, to 8-10 mm in fruit, and broadening, with villous glandular and eglandular hairs; upper lip shortly tridentate, broadly bisulcate. Corolla lilac to purple, 12-16 mm; tube ventricose, not squamulate, 6-7 mm; upper lip ± straight to subfalcate. Stamens B. Nutlets rounded tri-gonous, oblong, c. 2 x 1.5 mm. Fl. 3-5. Banks, in Quercus macchie, deciduous woodland, road- and fieldsides, s.l-900 m. Described from Europe (Hb. Linn. 42/20!). Mainly Outer Anatolia (E. to 37° E.),Islands.
