  S. Europe. Extremely variable in Anatolia. The typical European form, with short corollas and densely flowered verticillasters, occurs mainly between Istanbul and Samsun. Elsewhere, plants with longer corollas and often lax-flowered verticillasters predominate. These have been described as S. laxiflora C. Koch, S. hortensis L. var. grandiflora Boiss. or var. speciosa Nib. Local populations are often rather constant in their character correlations (including habit, leaf shape and density/laxity of inflorescence), but are connected by so many intermediate populations that formal recognition of infra-specific taxa would be unjustifie'd at this stage.
