S. turgida (Boiss. & Bal.) Boiss., Fl. Or. 2:918 (1872). Syn: Cyclotaxis turgida Boiss. & Bal. in Boiss., Diagn. ser. 2(5): 101 (1856)!
Differing from S. australis in the few, short, thick rays, the thickened, short (up to 1 mm) pedicels of the outer flowers and the shorter, broader (1-1.5 cm x up to 2.5 mm) outer fruit, scarcely different from the inner.
Type: [Turkey C5 Içel] Bouloukli, prope Mersin, v 1855, Balansa 631 (G!).
S. Anatolia. C3 Antalya: Hafis Paşa (Burdur to Antalya) 800 m, 31 v 1936, Tengwall. C5 Içel: Mersin, Bal. 579!
Syrian Desert. When Boissier described the genus Cyclotaxis (Diagn. ser. 1(10): 48, 1849) he distinguished it from Scandix on its non-radiant petals and dimorphic fruits. However, Balansa 579, cited above, shows clearly radiant outer petals, and the fruits of S. australis are often dimorphic with the central fruit obviously shorterand broader than the outer. Although the genus Cyclotaxis is maintained by some authors (e.g. Mout., Nouv. Fl. Lib. Syr. 2:589, 1970) its status is dubious.
