Bulb 0.7-l(-2) cm diam., tunics fuscous. Leaves 2-3(-5), linear, (3-)5-6(-28) cm x 4-5(-17)mm. Scapes l-3(-10), 6-8(-14) cm. Raceme 1-2-flowered; pedicels usually curved, shorter than perianth segments. Bracts amplexicaul (cuff-shaped), bifid, deltoid, 1-2 mm, usually truncate, cordate and inflated at base. Perianth segments deep blue, often white at base, with dark midrib, (10-)13-15 x (3-)4-5 mm, spreading, conduplicate at base. Filaments 1-2 mm broad at base. Ovary subglobose, 3-5 mm diam. Style relatively short and thick, (3-)4-6 mm. Seeds ovoid, c. 3 x 2 mm, pale brown with white cylindrical caruncle. 2n = 12 (as S, monanthos). Fl. (3-j4-5(-6j. Open grassy slopes, by melting snow, 1000-2500 m.

Subsp. caucasica (Miscz.) Mordak occurs in N. Iraq and Transcaucasia; subsp. siberica is found in S.& southern C.Russia, Caucasia, Crimea and ?Iran.

Bulb ovoid, tunics dark brown outside, violet-purple within. Leaves 2-4, broadly linear, synanthous, 3-10 cm x 4-8 mm. Scapes l-4(-6), slender. Raceme lax, l(-3)-flowered; pedicels curved, 2-10 mm, shorter than perianth segments. Bracts bifid, 1-2.5 mm. Perianth segments lilac-blue, with dark midrib, 9-18 x 2-5 mm, spreading. Filaments 6-7 mm, dilated at base. Ovary sub-globose. Style (5-)6-8.5(-ll) mm. Seeds subglobose, c. 2 mm diam., pale brown with white caruncle. 2n = 12. Fl. 3-4. Rocky steppe, c. 1000 m.
