Annual or biennial with erect or ascending stems up to 15(-25) cm. Leaves up to 8(-l 1) mm. Inflorescence usually dense with the upper leaves usually exceeding the flowers. Perigynous cup 0.8-1.6 mm in fruit, glabrous or with sparse hairs on the ribs. Sepals equalling or longer than the perigynous cup in fruit, spreading or erect or connivent, tapering from the base to the acute apex, not incurved to form a hook, with the scarious margin much narrower than the green central part. Widespread in Europe, Caucasia. A record for Lesvos (Fl. Aeg. 134) requires confirmation. The distinction of this subspecies from subsp. verticillatus is somewhat tenuous, and they might be better united.
