E. Alps to Carpathians and Balkan peninsuia. This species is known only from western Turkey except for two collections from vilayet Çoruh in extreme N.E. Anatolia. One of these two collections appears to have the erect habit and purple stems of subsp. dichotomus, while the other appears to have a procumbent habit and no purple colouration, as in subsp. marginatus. They are consequently here referred to different subspecies, but further observations are required.
