Distribution of species: C. & S. Europe, W. Syria, Iraq, Caucasia, Iran. An extremely variable species. The varieties recognized here probably only represent portions of a continuously varying complex of forms with the smaller caespitose varieties tending to occur at higher altitudes. There is no clearcut geographical separation, however, between the varieties. Literature records of the species in the wide sense are numerous but these are not included because there is uncertainty as to their identity. The species is closely allied to S. laciniata.
