N.W. Iran, Caucasia. Ir.-Tur. element. This species appears to be more variable outside Turkey than within. A flowering specimen from B9 Ağri (45 km fromKaraköse to Horasan, Rech. 14998!) with leaves 3-5 cm wide, may be referable to var. macrophylla Prilipko (apud Lipschitz, Fragm. Monogr. Gen. Scorz. 1 : 136, 1935). The species is distinguished from S. tomentosa by its hairy achenes and sparsely hairy leaves. This and the following four species form a complex of closely allied taxa, some of which may not be specifically distinct. A compre-hensive review of Caucasian material of this complex is required before the status of these taxa can be properly assessed.
