Caucasia, N., N.W. & C. Iran, Cyprus, Crimea. A record of the Syrian S. steudelii Boiss., from B5 Kayseri: Ali Da., c. 1500 m, Zederbauer, may refer to this variety. S. sanguineum clearly differs from S. rubens (to which it is referred by Fröderström) in having 10 stamens, and appears to be synonymous with var. pallidum.

Caucasia ? Euxine element. S. bithynicum Boiss. has traditionally been treated as a variety of S. hispanicum; it does, however, differ in its pentamerous flowers and erect follicles, in which characters it agrees more closely with S. pallidum. Var. bithynicum can usually be distinguished by its sterile rosettes or at least creeping caudiculi-indicators of its perennial habit-from var. pallidum. Some herbarium specimens cannot, however, be assigned to a variety. S. pallidum s.l. is a variable species requiring further study, preferably of live material.
