Erect glandular-pubescent annual herb, foetid. Stem often branched, 30-150 cm. Leaves petiolate, subentire; lower opposite, ovate to narrowly rhombic, with short axillary branchlets; upper alternate, lanceolate to linear. Flowers arising singly in axils of upper leaves, pedicels 2-5 mm. Calyx lobes lanceolate. Corolla white, fading light mauve, 2.5-3-5 cm. Capsule c. 7 x 30 mm, erect. Seeds obovate, narrowly marginate, 2.5-3 mm, finely reticulate. Fl. 7-8. Cultivated widely in Turkey, and occasionally escaping.

Native to the Old World tropics, exact area unknown (possibly Africa); widely cultivated for its oil-yielding seeds (Sesame, in Turkish 'Susam') used in making Halva and sprinkled on bread-rolls ('Simit').
