S. italica (L.) Pers., Synops. PI. 1: 498 (1805). Syn: Cucubalus itaiicus L., Syst. ed. 10, 1030 (1759); S. sieberi Fenzl, Pug. 22 (1842); S.papillifolia Williams in J. Linn. Soc. Bot. 32:91 (1896). Ic: Bonnier, Fl. Comp. Fr. Suisse et Belge 1: t. 359 (1913). Figure 4, p. 187. Erect perennial herbs with soft, short indumentum especially in the lower part, up to 80 cm. Basal leaves obovate to lanceolate, acute, petiolate; cauline leaves smaller and narrower. Inflorescence a wide, spreading panicle. Calyx ± tubular in flower, 15-21 mm, sparsely and shortly puberulous; clavate in fruit. Petals creamy or whitish, deeply bifid. Anthophore 7-11 mm. Capsule included in the calyx.
