Widespread in the Mediterranean area, eastwards to Iran, Iraq and USSR (Turkmenian SSR). Medit. element. In Turkey, S. lutea is apparently always associated with cultivated areas and may not be indigenous. A very poor specimen from 'Erzurum*, Zohrsb 8! probably represents this species.
