Steud., Norn. ed. 1, 192 (1821 ); Pyrethrum syriacum Boiss., Diagn. ser. 1(11): 24(1849). Erect or ascending subshrub with thin, branching, woody rootstock. Stems (7-)15-25 cm, leafy, white-tomentose. Leaves of sterile shoots and basal leaves of flowering stems 2-pinnatisect, (l-)2-5 x 0.5-1.75 cm, ovate or broadly elliptic in outline, pseudo-entire with contiguous segments, primary segments l0-25(-30)-paired, up to 0.9 cm, their lobes 3-12-paired, l-l.5(-2) x 0.5 mm, oblanceolate, acute or obtuse at apex, densely covered with silvery-white tomentum; cauline leaves smaller, primary segments generally distinct; uppermost leaves usually pinnatisect. Capitula 3-7(-18) in sparse or dense corymbs, sometimes solitary, Involucre 5-8(-10) mm broad; phyllaries lanceolate to linear-oblong, 2.5-4.5 x 1 mm, usually white-tomentose, pale or brownish-scarious at margins and apices, Ray flowers 12-15(-20), yellow; ligules l-4(-5) x 1.5-2 mm, 3-lobed at apex. Disc flowers 2.75-3 mm. Achenes 5-8-ribbed, greyish-brown, 2-2.5 mm; corona minutely dentate, c. 0.1 mm. 2n = 18. Fl. 6-8. Limestone rocks and screes, 1500-2500 m.

Endemic. The species apparently belongs to the Irano-Turanian element, and approaches T. praeteritum in leaf characteristics. Subsp. densum is confined to Anti-Lebanon and Mt. Hermon.
