Perennial, stoloniferous herb, shortly villous. Stems erect or sometimes ascending, branched, 5-75 cm. Leaves oblong to ovate-oblong, crenate to dentate, cordate to cuneate at base, usually amplexicaul on main stem (except in subsp. scordium). Lateral branches bearing smaller dentate leaves (cuneate or rounded at base), upper ones (floral leaves) bearing 1-4 flowers in each axil and overtopping the flowers. Pedicels 3-5(-6) mm. Calyx obconical-campanulate, (2.5-)3-5 mm, divided to 1/3 into equal triangular acute teeth. Corolla purplish-pink or mauve, 2 x calyx. Fl. 5-9. Damp places, in fresh or slightly saline marshes, by streams, in forest, moist dunes and fallow fields, 50-2350 m.

Most of Europe. Euro-Sib. element. This subspecies reaches its south-eastern limit in S.W. Anatolia, where the cited specimens are atypical, being dwarf, weak-stemmed and small-leaved. A similar gathering has been seen from Gotland (Sweden).

A few specimens have been seen that are ± intermediate between the two subspecies, e.g. A3 Sakarya: Orman köy to Adapazari, 50 m, D. 39064! The taxonomy of the species is complicated by the occurrence of other infraspecific taxa in Afghanistan.
