T. kotschyanus Boiss. & Hohen. in Boiss., Diagn. ser. 1(5):16 (1844). Suberect freely branching dwarf shrub lacking prostrate basal branches;
flowering stems 3-10 cm, variously hairy all round. Leaves 9-13 x 4.5-6(-9) mm, incl. 1-2 mm petiole, all subequal, acutish, truncate to rounded at base, ciliate at base, oil dots numerous, usually brown-red; venation prominent beneath, with 3 pairs of lateral veins, the lowest marginal vein and often also the other two joining apically to form a marginal thickening. Inflorescence usually a dense head 1-2 x 1-1.5 cm, with subtending bracts similar to leaves. Bracteoles 0.5-1.5(-2.5) mm, usually ± equalling pedicels. Calyx (3.2-)4-5.2(-5.6) mm, tube usually shorter than lips; upper lip wider than tube, usually equal to or somewhat longer than lower teeth; upper teeth 0.7-1.2 mm, lanceolate-aristate, ciliate or not. Corolla white or pale pinkish, 6-7.5 mm. Fl. 5-7. Bare stony mountain slopes, c. 800-2250 m.

2. Stems ± patently villous-pubescent with hairs ± equalling or longer than stem diam.; leaves densely whitish pubescent var. eriophorus

Iraq, Iran. Ir.-Tur. element. D. 16423 and Haradj. 4588 were identified by Ronniger & Rechinger in Phyton (Horn) 5:292 (1954) as T. kotschyanus var. hohenackeri Ronniger. Together with Haussknecht's plant from Ahir Da., they differ in having subsessile leaves (petiole c. 0.5 mm), some of which have only 2 pairs of lateral veins, calyx c. 4 mm, upper lip shorter than lower, and upper teeth c. 0.7 mm, not ciliate. They possibly deserve taxonomic recognition.
A specimen from B10 Kars: d. Aralik, Küçük Ağri Da. near Serdar Bulak, 2300 m, D. 46888! shows an exceptionally wide variation in calyx shape and size, from campanulate 3.5 mm (similar to T. collinus) to subcylindrical 5.6 mm. According to the description, T. ararati-minoris Klokov & Shost. in Trudy Bot. Inst. Akad. Nauk SSSR Azerb. Fil. 2:304 (1936), from the same mountain area, has ± densely hairy leaves with evanescent lateral veins (camptodromous venation), and calyx 5-6 mm. It possibly falls within the variation range of T. kotschyanus.
