Black Sea coast of Balkans, S. Russia, Transcaucasia, Iran, Cyprus. E. Medit. element. T. venetum subsp. venetum, differing from the Turkish subspecies by its almost sessile leaves with petiole 1-2 mm (2-6 mm in subsp. sarmatiense), compact, few-flowered 1-8 cm inflorescence (loose, many-flowered, 4-20 cm in subsp. sarmatiense) and ovate (not oblong) corolla lobes, occurs in Italy on the N. Adriatic coast from Trieste to Po di Levante. Some specimens from Turkey-in-Europe approach it; the uniformity of the N. Adriatic population, its apparent sterility (with pollen grains 5-15% fertile), its effective vegetative multiplication and its geographical isolation suggest that it may be a single clone; it may have been accidentally introduced into Venice from the Istanbul region in the Middle Ages during the extensive long-continued commercial intercourse between the two cities.
T. venetum, sensu lato, as generally accepted comprises a number of inter-grading taxa distributed from Europe to Japan which have been distinguished in Fl. URSS 18:652-659 (1952) as T. armenum (Pobed.) Pobed., T. lancifolium (Russan.) Pobed., T. sarmatiense Woodson, T. scabrum (Russan.) Pobed., T. russanovii (Pobed.) Pobed. and T. tauricum (Pobed.) Pobed. Specimens corresponding to T. armenum (as T. venetum (L.) Woodson subsp. armenum (Pobed.) Rech. fil. in Fl. Iranica - Apocynaceae 6, 1976) occur in the Flora of Turkey area.
