T. buphthalmoides (DC.) Boiss., Fl. Or. 3:750 (1875). Figure 25, p. 661. Perennial, 5-50 cm, sparsely floccose at first, becoming ± glabrous with age. Stems branched or unbranched. Leaves linear-lanceolate to broadly oblong, scarcely acuminate. Peduncles very slightly thickened below fruiting capitula. Involucre floccose at base. Phyllaries c. 8, lanceolate, shorter to slightly longer than flowers, 1.5-2 cm in flowering capitulum, 2.75-3.5 cm in fruiting capitulum. Flowers yellow. Achenes 17-25(-35) mm, with 5 longitudinal rows of scales ± fused into shallow wings, beak shorter than achene, clavate at apex. Pappus 15-20 mm, greyish-brown, annulus hairy. Fl. 5-8. Scree, cultivated fields, 980-2500 m. 1. Cauline leaves linear-lanceolate, 0.5-1 cm at widest part var. buphthalmoides 1. Cauline leaves broadly oblong, 1.5-3.5 cm at widest part var. latifolius var. buphthalmoides. A specimen from B10 Ağri (15 km E. of Doğubayazit, 1613 m, D.M.Brown 473!) fits with var. latifolius but has white flowers. Two collections from C5 Adana (Karanfil, Bisby 59! 60!) are very close to T. buphthalmoides s.l. except that the scales on the achenes are rather short and hardly form wings. Uotila 19562 from B9 Ağri (10 km E. of Ağri, 1650 m) approaches var. buphthalmoides but the fruiting phyllaries are c. 5 cm and the achene beak is longer than the achene.
