T. longirostris Bisch. ex Schultz Bip. in Webb & Berth., Phyt. Canar. 2:469 (1850). Sparsely floccose to glabrous biennial, 10-80 cm. Stems little-branched or un-branched. Leaves linear. Peduncles swollen below capitula. Phyllaries (5-)6-8, lanceolate, attenuate, longer than flowers, 2.5-4 cm in flowering capitulum, 4-8 cm in fruiting capitulum. Flowers pale lilac to dusky violet. Achenes buff-coloured, 18-45 mm, with 10 longitudinal rows of short separate scales, beak longer or shorter than achene, clavate at apex. Pappus 20-35 mm, pale greyish-brown, annulus sparsely hairy. C10 Hakkari: c. 10km from Yüksekova, Trelawny 1003! Distribution of species: W. Syria, Arabia, Cyprus, Crete. Var. brachyphyllus Boiss., Fl, Or. 3 : 746 (Syn: T. orgyale Reuter in Cat. Hort. Genève, 1863) is said to differ from the other varieties of T. longirostris in having phyllaries equal in length to the flowers, and a short achene beak. The description was based on a Bourgeau specimen collected from C2 Antalya: Elmali, and I have seen a specimen from J  grown from seed collected from this gathering. This plant certainly agrees with Boissier's description and also seems to be taller and stouter than the other varieties, and to have broader leaves. More material is needed to decide whether or not var. brachyphyllus should be recognized.
