Sparsely floccose to glabrous perennial, 10-60 cm, base of stem with fibrous remains of old leaf bases, often very dense. Stems little-branched or unbranched. Leaves linear to narrowly linear, 3-15 mm wide, margin flat or undulate. Peduncles not thickened below capitula. involucre often floccose at base. Phyllaries (5-)8(-10), lanceolate, shorter than flowers, 2-3 cm in flowering capitulum, 2.5-4.5 cm in fruiting capitulum. Flowers yellow, often turning bluish when dry. Achenes 18-30 mm, whitish-fawn, with 5 longitudinal rows of remote scales, beak ± equal to or slightly shorter than achene, clavate at apex. Pappus 20-23 mm, pale greyish-brown, annulus hairy. Fl. 4-9. Stony slopes, meadows, damp places, 450-3350 m.

Caucasia. Close to T. graminifolius DC. from Caucasia and Iran with which it may be synonymous (see p. 668). A specimen from A9 Kars (Sarikamiş, 2100 m, D. 30779!) matches the material of T. reticulatus but has white flowers.
