Erect or ascending perennial, 30-80 cm. Leaflets 2-6 cm, elliptic to oblong-lanceolate, leathery; stipules c. 1 cm, membranous, ovate, adnate to the stem. Inflorescence capitate, globose to ovoid, 1.5-2.0 cm diam., many-flowered, elongating in fruit, peduncles 4-15 cm. Bracts elliptic, shorter than calyx tube. Flowers whitish, pedicels at most ⅓ as long as calyx. Calyx 6-8 mm, campanulate, 10-nerved, teeth unequal. Corolla (l.2-)l.5-l.7 cm, standard longer than wings and keel. Legume 5-6 mm, ovoid-oblong, usually 2-seeded. Fl. 8. Mountain slopes, etc., 1800-2400 m.
Described from plants cultivated at Berlin, raised from seed collected at Tiflis (Georgia) by Noodt.

Caucasus, Soviet Armenia. Subsp. humboldtianum differs from subsp. montanum of C. & S. Europe in its glabrous stems and larger flowers.
