Mediterranean area, Asia, tropical Africa, tropical America. The commonest species of Typha in Turkey. Easily recognised by the scales on the female spike, which have a pale, ovate to lanceolate but clearly acuminate apex. However, variation in these characters occurs. A specimen from A2(A) Istanbul (Agva, Unsal ISTE 38328!) from a seashore habitat has scales with a narrow apex, while one from A4 Zonguldak (ISTE 38159, cited above) has scales with an almost brown apex due to the presence of a great number of dark cells.
