Racemes 6-25 (incl. lateral branches), 20-40(-50)-flowered with 2-7 pedicels per cm in fruit, glabrous or ± glandular-pubescent with 0.05-0.15 mm glandular hairs (eglandular hairs always completely absent). Bracts linear to lanceolate, acute. Fruiting pedicels 4-7(-8) mm, 1 .5-3 x bracts, suberect, arcuate-erect to subpatent. Calyx 2-2.5 mm in flower. Almost cosmopolitan. Rather variable in habit and leaf shape by environmental and genetic modification. For notes on variation in leaf base see V. oxy-carpa. V. anagallis-aquatica is connected by transitional (hybrid?) forms with V. oxycarpa, V. scardica, V. lysimachioides, and V. anagalloides (q.v.).
