S. Europe, Caucasia, Lebanon, Syria, N. & N.W. Iran. In Turkey commonest in Irano-Turanian territory. Var. pictum (Boiss.) Boiss. and var. unicolor Boiss. (of X. squarrosum) were distinguished respectively by the presence and absence of a reddish-brown median streak on the outer phyllaries. In extreme forms this character is very well marked, but since intermediates are common and there is no geographical or ecological limitation of the variants it seems unnecessary to give them taxonomic recognition.
