S. pecten-veneris L., Sp. PL 256 (1753). Ic: Ross-Craig, Draw. Brit. Pl. 12: t. 34(1958). Plant ± erect, ± glabrous, pilose or setose, 6-35 cm. Leaves oblong to oblong-ovate, 2(-3)-pinnate or pinnatisect, 6-20 x l-4(-6) cm, ultimate lobes linear to lanceolate, 0.75-8.0 mm. Rays l-2(-3), usually ± equal, 5-20 mm, thick in fruit. Bracteoles 3-5, entire to deeply 2-5-toothed from apex, seldom with membranous margin, 5-10 x 1.5-4 mm. Pedicels 2-7, ± equal, 2-4 mm. Fruit usually scabrid. occasionally glabrous, 3-7.5 cm x 1-3.5 mm; beak gradually attenuate to apex, ciliate, somewhat striate, dorsally compressed, longer than fertile portion. Ridges brownish-green, usually as broad as or broader than dark valleculae. Fl. 3-6. Rocky limestone slopes, Pinus and Populus plantations, hedgebanks, roadsides, fieldsides, s.1.-980 m.
