C. hamulosus Ehrh., Beitr. Naturk. 7:166 (1792). Biennial, 20-60(-100) cm, sparsely arachnoid. Stem narrowly undulate-winged with triangular, shortly spinulose-margined lobes, sparsely branched. Cauline leaves pinnatifid to ½-¾, primary segments 2-3-fid into ovate-triangular, shortly spinulose-margined lobes, often grey-tomentellous below. Peduncles long, 5-20 cm, spinulose-lobulate below, ± naked and tomentose above. Involucre solitary, depressed-globose, subglabrous, 20-30 x 25-40 mm; phyllaries gradually imbricate or outer ½-1 x as long as median, lax, outer lanceolate, median lanceolate-linear, 1-nerved above broadened base, ± recurved towards acute spinulose apex. Corollas zygomorphic, purple (rarely white), 18-25 mm. Achenes c. 4 mm, brown?; pappus 14-17 mm. Fl. 6-8. 1. Phyllaries attenuate above broadened basal portion, gradually enlarging from base to apex of involucre subsp. hamulosus 1.
