C. polypodiifolia Boiss., Diagn. ser. 1(6): 126 (1845). Biennial or perennial with thickened taproot, 25-75 (or more?) cm, with numerous branches, capitula corymbosely arranged. Stem, branches, and lowerleaves with crisp articulate hairs, other leaves ± glabrescent. Leaves firm, with elevated nerves; basal pinnatifid with 6-8(-10) pairs of linear-lanceolate acute segments (sometimes lobed near base), lower pinnatilobate, median ovate-oblong, broadly decurrent, upper-ovate to lanceolate, shortly decurrent or sessile. Involucre 16-22 x (8-)9-17 mm, contracted towards top. Appendage a minute deciduous tip, a pinnate spinule up to 6 mm, or lanceolate and ciliate, always small, not concealing basal part of phyllaries. Flowers yellow. Achenes 4-5 mm; pappus 4-8 mm. Fl. 6-8. Rocky slopes, steppe, fallow fields, 800-2500 m. 1. Appendage very small (0.5-2.5 mm) and easily deciduous, a simple spinule or with 1-2 pairs of minute teeth 2. Involucre 8-13 mm broad, rarely broader; upper leaves narrowly lanceolate, not concealing involucre var. polypodiifolia 2 . Involucre 14-17 mm broad; upper leaves broadly lanceolate to oblong, ± concealing involucre var. szovitsiana 1. Appendage larger (3-6 mm), partly persistent, with 2-4 mm cilia var. pseudobehen var. szovitsiana (Boiss.) Wagenitz in Notes R.B.G. Edinb. 33:229 (1974). Syn: C. szovitsiana Boiss., Fl.
