C. pseudoscabiosa Boiss. & Buhse in Nouv. Mém. Soc. Nat. Mosc. 12:131 (1860). Perennial, 15-90 cm, stem erect, simple or with few branches, hispid or slightly tomentose to subglabrous. Basal and lower leaves usually lyrate with 1-3 pairs of lanceolate lateral segments and a much larger terminal segment or more rarely lanceolate, undivided or like median leaves pinnatisect to pinnatifid with 2-4 pairs of lateral segments, segments entire or (especially terminal) dentate. Involucre (17-)20-28 x 14-25 mm, oblong-ovoid to subglobose. Appendages covering only part of phyllaries, dark brown, triangular with a decurrent ciliate margin and a short, 1-5 mm, terminal spine. Flowers purple, marginal scarcely radiant. Achenes 5-6(-7) mm; pappus -10(-11) mm, inner row (l.5-)2-3 mm. 1. Appendages very small, cilia only 1.5-2(-3) mm; involucre usually only 15-17 mm broad subsp. araratica 1. Appendages larger, cilia (2-)3-5 mm; involucre usually broader 2. Plant usually over 40 cm, branched in upper part subsp. pseudoscabiosa 2. Plant usually up to 35 cm, unbranched or branched from near base subsp. glehnii subsp. araratica (Azn.) The delimitation of the subspecies is not easy and they show no clear geographical or ecological distribution pattern. Sect. Aegialophila (Boiss. & Heldr.) O.Hoffm. Perennials with very short stem and few medium-sized capitula. Leaves lyrate or undivided. Involucre ovoid. Appendage a decurrent entire membranous border ± dilated above and ending in a spinule. Flowers pink, marginal slightly radiant. Achenes medium-sized, densely hairy; pappus easily deciduous, barbellate to plumose, inner row short. |
