C. pterocaula Trautv. in Acta Horti Petrop. 2:552 (1873). Syn: Chartolepis biebersteinii Jaub. & Spach, I11. PL Or. 3:10 (1847) pro parte; Centaurea bieber-steinii (Jaub. & Spach) Walp., Ann. Bot. Syst. 1:448 (1849) non C. biebersteinii DC. (1838); C. glastifolia L. var. biebersteinii (Jaub. & Spach) Gugler in Ann. Hist.-Nat. Mus. Hung. 6:239 (1908); C. finitima Bordz. in Trudy Bot. Sada Jur'ev. 13:24 (1912); Chartolepis finitima (Bordz.) Iljin in Izv. Bot. Sada Akad. Nauk SSR 30:353 (1932); Chartolepis pterocaula (Trautv.) Czerep. in Not. Syst. (Leningrad) 20:463 (1960). Ic: Jaub. & Spach, I11. PL Or. 3: t. 208 (1847). Similar to C. glastifolia but with smaller capitula and appendages: involucrec. 18-22 x 10-18 mm, oblong; appendages not totally concealing basal part of phyllaries, 5-7(-8) mm broad, with a small light brown mark. Pappus 6-11 mm. Fl. 7-8. Meadows, dry slopes, waste fields, (900-) 1500-2100 m.
Type: [of Chartolepis biebersteinii] numerous syntypes from different regions; name restricted to plants from the Caucasus by Boissier. Inner Anatolia (mainly eastern). A9 Kars: Kazikoparan, Radde 525! B4 Konya: Koçhisar G., nr Dondurma, c. 900 m, Birand & Kasapligil 744! B8 Muş: d. Varto, S. side of Bingöl Da., Kotschy 1859:291! B9 Ağri: 45 km from Ağri to Horasan, Rech. 15002! Van: Çatak to Gevaş road, 2100 m, Tong 343! C1O Hakkari: Yüksekova, 1950 m, Duncan & it 178! 179!
Transcaucasia; N.W. Iran (?). Ir.-Tur. element. Czerepanov has maintained Chartolepis biebersteinii and Ch. pterocaula as two separate species (Fl. URSS 28:338), but I see no reason to distinguish two small-capitulate species in E. Anatolia and Transcaucasia, and nomenclaturally Centaurea pterocaula must be regarded as a new name for Chartolepis biebersteinii in the genus Centaurea (where the epithet'biebersteinii' could not be used because of an earlier homonym).
Typical plants of C. glastifolia and C. pterocaula look very different, although the differences are mostly in quantitative characters, but there are some critical specimens with small capitula and relatively broad appendages, e.g. A9 Kars: E. of Kagizman, c. 20 km from Akcay to Cumaçay, 2200 m, D. 46686! B5 Kayseri: Egrek nr Kayseri, 7 viii 1856, Bal.! Still more difficult is the delimitation from other small-headed taxa outside Turkey ('Chartolepis intermedia Boiss.', 'Ch. lyrata Boiss. & Hausskn.').
