C. saligna (C.Koch) Wagenitz in Bot. Jahrb. 82:172 (1963). Syn: Chartolepis saligna C.Koch in Linnaea 24:421 (1851); Centaurea schizolepis Trautv. in acta Horti Petrop. 2:553 (1873); Phaeopappus salignus (C.Koch) Boiss., Fl. Or. 3:596(1875). Perennial, stems 20-70 cm, erect or slightly bent at base, simple or with several one-headed branches. Leaves firm, scabrous with septate hairs, nerves elevated; lower leaves lanceolate, narrowed into a short petiole, median and upper oblong-lanceolate (rarely linear-lanceolate), sessile with half-clasping base or shortly decurrent, uppermost ± enveloping capitula. Involucre 28-30 x 25-35 mm, nearly globose. Appendages very large, totally concealing basal parts of phyllaries, strawy, irregularly lacerate to ciliate, ending in a short 1-4 mm mucro. Flowers yellow, marginal not radiant. Achenes 6-8 mm; pappus (16-)20-25(-28) mm, plumose. Fl. 7-8. Steppe, rocky slopes, 1400-2000 m. Ir.-Tur. element. A very distinct and isolated species. There is an interesting similarity with the S.W. Anatolian C. ensiformis, but the pappus is different. Sect. Rhizocalathium Tzvelev (Sect. Acrocentron § Rhizanihae Boiss. pro parte). Perennials, stem very short, simple or branched, capitula medium-sized. Leaves Iyrate or pinnatipartite or sometimes undivided, ± densely hirsute with multi-cellular hairs. Involucre ovoid to subglobose. Appendages very variable: a simple mucro or spinule or triangular to ovate and ciliate, not decurrent or very slightly so, often easily deciduous. Flowers yellow, marginal not radiant. Achenes medium-sized; pappus scabrous, short. |
