C. spectabilis (Fisch. & Mey.) Schultz Bip. in Linnaea 19:326 (1847). Perennial with woody rootstock and several erect or ascending stems, 10-60 cm, simple or with few simple branches. Leaves ± densely floccose-grey-tomentose; basal and lower petiolate, mostly pinnatisect with 3-7 pairs of lanceolate lateral segments, decurrent along rachis, 8-12 mm broad, and a terminal segment slightly to distinctly larger, sometimes undivided; median very variable, pinnatisect to pinnatifid (often with few asymmetric lobes only in upper 1/2) or undivided, upper simple. Involucre (20-)25-30 x(16-) 20-28 mm, ovoid to sub-globose. Appendages oniv partly concealing basal part of phyllaries, straw-coloured or brown to blackish-brown, triangular to rectangular, not decurrent, with (3-)6-7 cilia (1-5 mm) on each side. Flowers yellow, central usually with violet anther-tube, rarely flowers purple, marginal not radiant. Achenes 6-8(-9) mm; pappus 12-17 mm, brownish. Fl. (6-)7(-8). Dry slopes, meadows, forest-steppe, 853-2650 m. 1. Appendages straw-coloured to light brown, triangular with (3-)4-7 cilia on each side (3-4 mm) 2. Leaves at least partly pinnatisect (very rarely all undivided and lanceolate) var. spectabilis 2. All leaves undivided, broadly lanceolate to elliptic var. araneosa 1.
