C. congestum Fisch. & Mey. ex DC, Prodr. 6:641 (1838). Biennial ? or perennial, 100-200 cm. Stem stout, branched, unwinged, giabrous. Median cauline leaves oblong, semi-amplexicaul, pinnatilobed to pinnatifid, lateral lobes bi- or trifid, -12-paired, triangular to triangular-lanceolate, lateral and terminal lobes with 7-16 mm apical spine, sparsely spinose-strigose above (c. 2 setae per 2 mm square) with setae 0.4-2.8 mm, glabrous above and below. Lateral branches at least 6, with 1-8 dense corymbs, c. 5-25-capitulate, uppermost leaves subtending corymbs, c. 4-7, equal to or overtopping involucres. Involucres sessile, campanulate to obovoid, 25-35 mm. Phyllaries glabrous, 7-9-seriate. greenish-yellow; median 17-25 mm incl. ± erect c. 10 x 0.3-0.4 mm apical spine. Corollas pinkish-purple, 21-26 mm. Achenes 6.0-6.5 mm. Pappus 21-25 mm. Fl. 7-9. Rocky slopes near river, shaded rock ledges, gravel terraces, 1800-1829 m. Type: [N.W.
