C. elodes Bieb., Fl. Taur.-Cauc. 3:555 (1819). Syn: C. elodes Bieb. var. indivisum DC, Prodr. 6:642 (1838); C. subinerme Fisch. & Mey. in Mem. Acad. Sci. Pétersb. ser. 6 sci. nat. 6:55 (1849); C. elodes Bieb. var. floccosum Freyn in Bull. Herb. Boiss. 3:468 (1895)! Tall perennial, 60-180 cm. Stems broadly and continuously winged, minutely spinulose to conspicuously spined, sparsely paniculate above. Median cauline leaves oblong-elliptic, 10-18 x 3-6 cm, entire to sinuate lobed to less than ½-way (lobes usually more numerous than in the 3 following spp.), spinulose to spinose with 1-5 mm spines, herbaceous, densely arachnoid-tomentose (sometimes floccose) to sparsely arachnoid (hairs unicellular, slender). Capitula pedunculate to subsessile, borne near top of stem or branches, not subtended by involucrate leaves. Involucres hemispherical, 12-16 mm. Phyllaries 6-8-seriate, ± arachnoid distally, outer and median ovate to oblong-lanceolate, apex subacute, blackish-vittate, bearing a yellowish or blackish, erect or patent 0.5-1.5 mm spine. Corollas 14-17 mm, purplish-pink. Achenes immature. Pappus 12-14 mm. Fl. 6-9. Water meadows, streamsides and springs, 1300-2440 m. Type: no locality designated (see below). Inner Anatolia and Anti-Taurus. A4 Çankiri: d. Ilgaz, nr Topali, 1300 m, Hub.-Mor. 12866! A5 Amasya: Abadschidagh (Abaci Da.), 1300-1500 m, Bornm. 1889:1491! A7 Gümüşane: Büyükdere above Artabir, Sint. 1894:7168 (type of var. floccosum Freyn & Sint.)! A8 Erzurum: Kop Da. pass, 2440 m, Furse 3753! B6 Maraş: Binboğa Da. on Işik Da., 1900 m, D. 20092! B7 Erzincan: Sipikör, Göl De., Sint. 1890:3289! Tunceli: d. Hozat, foot of Munzur Da., 1500 m, D. 31461! B8 Erzurum: Erzurum, Aucher 3389! B9 Van: 5 km S. of Başkale, 2300 m, D. 23789! C6 Adana: nr Hadjin (Hacin), B.Post 566! C10 Van/Hakkari: c. 50 km from Başkale to Hakkari, 1800 m, McNeill 688! Caucasia, N.W. & W. Iran, N. Iraq. Ir.-Tur. element. Very variable in leaf shape and amount of indumentum; forms with subentire leaves have been called var. indivisum (e.g. D. 20092 from B6), but every transition to pinnatilobed occurs. Type material of C. subinerme is evidently a weak-spined shade form of C. elodes, the spines being long and conspicuous on the petioles of the basal leaves; McNeill 688 from B9 is a good match. Material in LE, determined as the 'type' of C. elodes and collected by Bieberstein at Schamachy in Caucasia, is glabrous and does not match Bieberstein's original description of C. elodes; it is apparently C. alatum. |
