Several-stemmed perennial, c. 75-130 cm. Stems branched, unwinged, floccose-arachnoid. Median cauline leaves semi-amplexicaul, oblong, pinnatisect, lateral lobes bifid, 4-8-paired, triangular to lanceolate-triangular; lateral and terminal lobes with moderately stout 3-13 mm apical spine; spinose-strigose above with setae 0.3-1.2 mm, otherwise glabrous; arachnoid below. Lateral branches many, very short, 1-10-capitulate; uppermost leaves 2-4, usually shorter than involucre, sometimes longer, involucrate. Involucres erect in racemose panicle, campanulate-obconical to broadly obovoid, 10-15 mm. Phyllaries sparsely arachnoid, c. 7-9-seriate; median 4-10 mm, including slightly reflexed 0.5-1.0 x 0.1-0.2 mm apical spine. Corollas pink to purple, 11-18.5 mm. Achenes c. 5 mm. Pappus 12-14 mm. Fl. 8-9. Field drain, dry waste ground, 1140-1950 m.

N. Iraq, W. Iran. Ir.-Tur. element. Turkish material differs from the type description in having a glabrous rather than canescent upper leaf surface. The species is distinguished from C. lappaceum by its smaller involucres which are narrowed (rather than rounded) at base.
