C. arbelensis C.Winkler & Boram. in Bull. Herb. Boiss. 3(11):567, t. 14 (1895). Map 35, p. 341. Biennial or perennial, 20-30 cm, with few, spreading, ± uninterruptedly winged branches. Leaves loosely arachnoid-woolly, glabrescent above, densely grey or white woolly-tomentose below; basal leaves lyrately pinnatipartite, lanceolate, up to 18x6 cm, with few or up to 12 pairs of small lateral segments and an enlarged ovate terminal lobe up to 10x6 cm; stem leaves abruptly smaller, ± lobed or toothed, decurrent into long and broad spiny wings. Capitula few, 60-90-flowered. Involucre broadly ovoid, 3.5-7 cm broad incl. spines; phyllaries c. 60, arachnoid-woolly, soon glabrescent, basal part adpressed, ovate to lanceolate, appendage of lower phyllaries small, lanceolate, refiexed, of median spreading, + large, deltate or hastate, up to 2.5 x 1-1.5 cm, acuminate into a long spine. Bristles of receptacle smooth or finely denticulate above. Flowers pink, 22-27 mm. Achenes brown, oblong-obovate, 4-4.5 x 2 mm, striped lengthwise, denticulate at apex. Fl. 5-6.
