Biennial or perennial, 30-50 cm, adpressed white-tomentose throughout, sometimes ± glabrescent. Stems stout, ± angular, branched from base. Leaves densely and unequally spiny-toothed, when glabrescent glandular-dotted; basal leaves oblong-lanceolate, 10-25 x 5-8 cm, pinnatifid to pinnatipartite, shortly petioled, with 4-10 pairs of broadly triangular-ovate, spiny-toothed or -lobed segments, longest spines 1 cm or more; stem leaves gradually smaller and less divided, decurrent into very short or up to 2(-5) cm long wings. Capitula 3-8(-14), 80-130-flowered. Involucre ± globose, 4-7(-9) cm broad incl. spines; phyllaries c. 70-100, often glabrescent, appendage of lower and median ones mostly reflexed, triangular-ovate to lanceolate, strongly keeled and often folded, 1-3 x 0.3-1 cm, with terminal spine up to 1 cm. Bristles of receptacle smooth or denticulate above. Flowers pink, 25-30 mm. Achenes dark brown, oblong-obovate, 5-6x2-2.5 mm, ribbed lengthwise, truncate and ± rounded at apex. Fl. 6-8. Rocky volcanic and limestone slopes, 780-3000 m.
