Biennial or perennial, 15-45 cm. Stems branched from base, arachnoid-woolly, glabrescent. Leaves arachnoid-woolly, becoming greenish and glabrous above, densely white-tomentose below; basal leaves broadly or narrowly ovate, 5-15 x 2.5-10 cm, petiole 1-4 cm, unequally toothed or shallowly lobed, spiny, with spines up to 8 mm; stem leaves becoming abruptly smaller, long-decurrent into cuneate wings, uppermost leaves broadly triangular, adpressed to heads. Capitula 25-35, 15-50-flowered. Involucre ovoid or nearly globose, 1.5-2.5 cm broad incl. spines; phyllaries 25-40, white woolly-tomentose or glabrescent, abruptly contracted from an ovate adpressed base into a short, spreading, linear 3-10 mm spine. Bristles of receptacle smooth. Flowers pink, 11-13 mm. Achenes dark brown, oblong-cuneate, 3-5x1.5 mm, wrinkled, truncate and inconspicu-ously denticulate at apex. Fl. 5-8.
