Perennial, 15-25 cm, 1-6-headed, with few branches. Stems slender, terete, arachnoid-woolly, ± soon glabrescent. Leaves loosely arachnoid-woolly, glabrescent above, densely white-tomentose below, finely prickly; basal leaves lanceolate, 5-15 x 2-4 cm, pinnatipartite, with numerous pairs of linear or linear-lanceolate segments 1-3 mm broad; stem leaves similar but smaller, with less numerous segments, upper ones pinnately lobed, with 2-4 pairs of lanceolate or linear segments, stem leaves always sessile, amplexicaul at base, not decurrent. Capitula 10-25-flowered. Involucre ovoid, 1.2-2 cm broad incl. spines; phyllaries85-95, loosely arachnoid, soon glabrescent, lower and median ones acuminate from an oblong 2 mm adpressed base into a linear-subulate reflexed 4-8 mm upper part. Bristles of receptacle smooth. Flowers yellow, 10-11 mm. Achenes brown, oblong-obovate, wrinkled, longitudinally striped, finely marginate and denticulate at apex. Fl. 7. Steppe, c. 1920 m.
