Stems slender, terete, striped lengthwise, with erect-spreading branches, arachnoid-woolly, soon glabrescent and glandular-dotted. Leaves leathery, white arachnoid-tomentose on both sides, often glabrescent and glandular-dotted, conspicuously reticulate-veined, with crowded spiny teeth, ± wavy-margined; basal leaves oblong, 5-15 x 2.5-3.5 cm, pinnately lobed or lyrately pinnatisect, with up to 8 pairs of triangular segments, terminal lobe not enlarged; stem leaves gradually smaller, ovate to lanceolate, shallowly lobed or entire, decurrent into wings up to 2(-4) cm long. Capitula 65-90-flowered. Involucre broadly ovoid to globose, 3.5-5 cm broad incl. spines; phyllaries 70-90, arachnoid-woolly, soon glabrescent, ± glandular; appendage reflexed, horizontally or erect-spreading, lanceolate, ovate, cordate or sagittate, 10-15 x 3-7 mm, with 5-15 mm terminal spine and 1-6 lateral prickles. Bristles of receptacle smooth. Flowers pink or purple, 20-25 mm. Achenes bright brown, oblong-cuneate, 5x2 mm, finely longitudinally striped, apex finely margined and indistinctly denticulate. Iraq, but terminal lobe of basal leaves not enlarged, stem leaves less strongly decurrent. Sect. Pugioniferae Bunge. Biennials or perennials, monocarpic. Stems short or of medium size, mostly winged, corymbosely branched. Leaves mostly herbaceous, rarely coriaceous, pinnatisect, pinnatipartite or spiny-dentate. Capitula 8-50-flowered. Phyllaries (7-) 15-40, acuminate from a broad base into a keeled spine often longer than breadth of involucre. Flowers pink or purple, 7-15 mm. Achenes small, longitudinally striped or ribbed, often wrinkled, normally truncate and denticulate at apex. |
