C. pannonica (Jacq.) C.Koch in Linnaea 23:689 (1851). Syn: Hieracium pannonicum Jacq., Coll. 5:148 (1797); Crepis rigida Waldst. & Kit., PL Rar. Hung. 1:18, t. 19 (1802). Ic: Babcock, Gen. Crepis f. 106 (1947). Sturdy caulescent perennial (or biennial ?), 35-54 cm, with stout taproot. Stems erect, leafy, few- to many-capitulate, ± glabrous to hirsute. Basal leaves 5-17 x 1.5-4 cm, oblanceolate, dentate, apex acute, shortly setose especially on margin. Cauline leaves several, large or much reduced, auriculate. Peduncles 0.3-4 cm, arcuate-ascending. Capitula 50-65-flowered. Involucre 10.5-13 mm, minutely white-tomentose with or without short blunt setae on margins and midribs of phyllaries. Receptacle ciliate. Ligules c. 13 mm, yellow. Style branches yellow. Achenes c. 6.5 mm, attenuate above but unbeaked, reddish-brown, 12-14-ribbed, minutely spiculate. Pappus partly exserted from involucre. Fl. 7-9. Alt. 2150-2500 m.
