Plants 10-60 cm, unbranched except in inflorescence. Lower leaves up to 5 x 2 cm, ovate in outline, deeply pinnatifid to pinnate, segments narrowly linear, entire to faintly serrate, rachis glabrous; upper leaves decreasing in size; branches of corymb leafless. Capitula pedunculate or sessile. Involucre fusiform when young, expanding to narrowly obconical, in fruit 14-23 x 7-12 mm; phyllaries elliptic, acute, striped green or purplish. Flowers pink or light purple, exceeding involucre; corolla tube bearing hairs whose walls are produced into lateral finger-like recurved projections. Achenes cylindrical, 3-5 x 1.5-3 mm, with sub-orbicular median basal hilum. Outer pappus 4-7 mm. Fl. 5-7. Steppe, open places on uncultivated calcareous or clay soil, s.I.-2000 m.

S. Central and S. Europe, Morocco, Crimea, Caucasia, N.W. Iran. In Turkey more restricted and northern than C. crupinastrum. A specimen from Turkey-in-Europe (A2(E) Istanbul: San Stefano and Florya, 10 vi 1889, Azn.!) has unusually large fruits; the achene measures 6 x 3 mm, the pappus 11 mm. This gathering might be an autopolyploid.
