London (Bot.) ser. 2, 3:75, t. 31, 32 (1886). Stout perennial herb up to 2 m: base surrounded by fibrous remains of leaves. Basal leaves oblong or ovate, 30-50x15-25 cm (incl. petiole up to 12 cm), attenuate at base, acute or subacute at apex, margin repand-dentate, sub-coriaceous, venation prominent, villous-pubescent and minutely glandular, especially beneath; cauline leaves smaller, sessile, amplexicaul and auriculate at base. Capitula discoid, numerous, in corymbs. Involucre 1 -2 cm broad; phyllaries imbricate, 5-seriate, lanceolate-triangular, acuminate; outer 5 mm; inner 1 ■ 8 mm, finely pubescent and glandular. Flowers yellow. 10-12 mm. Achenes ± 4-5-angular, 65 mm, finely ribbed, minutely glandular. Pappus yellowish, hairs numerous, finely barbellate, 6-12 mm, rather brittle, connate at base. Fl. 6-7.
