L. crispus Vill., Prosp. Pl. Dauph. 34 (1779). subsp. asper (Waldst. & Kit.) Rohl. in Sitz. Böhm. Ges. Wiss. Math.-Nat. Kl. 1912: art. 1, p. 67 (1913). Taprooted perennial. Indumentum of coarse 2-4-forked hairs. Stems 9-50 cm, simple and sparsely bracteate or sparingly branched and leafy, not swollen beneath capitulum. Leaves 5-18 x 1-1.7 cm, oblanceolate in outline, acute at apex and tapering at base, sinuate-dentate to pinnatilobed, hispid. Involucre hemispherical, 10-20 mm long; phyllaries pluriseriate, linear-acute to acuminate, ± regularly imbricate, outer ciliate-pectinate and dorsally glabrous, pubescent or densely setose. Achenes beaked, all pappose. Pappus dirty white, of 15-42 hairs. Fl. 5-8. - A taxonomically difficult species in which the coarseness and density of indumentum vary considerably. 1. Dorsal surface of outer phyllaries glabrous or pubescent, sometimes very sparsely setose var. asper 1. Dorsal surface of outer phyllaries densely setose var. setulosus var. setulosus (Hal.) Europe to the Balkans and E. Central Russia, is distinguished from subsp. asper by its non-pectinate phyllaries. L. kotschyi Boiss. (Diagn. ser. 1(11):40, 1849!), which clearly differs from L. crispus in its stellate-tomentose indumentum and broader, regularly imbricated phyllaries, is endemic to N. & N.W. Iran and the Talysh. |
